Each morning she looked through her bedroom window at the beach. And every morning, the glass dripped condensation as the sultry salt air outside hit the transparent membrane chilled by the air-conditioned interior. Each drop of water was a lens focusing upside-down the stark reality outside. Each day the water came closer. They said ten feet a year. Maybe more. It depended on which statistic you believed from the Truth channel. Anyway, the news only got worse. The line between earth and sea was moving quickly. Time seemed to accelerate with every grain of sand washed into the bathtub-hot Gulf. Each morning was like a frame from the time-lapse movies she remembered from science class. In those faded films, flowers would blossom, days would turn into nights, in a matter of seconds. Now her window had become a projection screen. One day she knew she would wake and the thinning brown buffer between house and water would be gone. She would see only fields of blue. Blue sky, blue sea. On that dawn, thousands of worlds would be drowned in the droplets her house perspired, becoming itself an air bubble upon a glassy plane of water. Today, though, it was still possible to glimpse other futures within the shimmering refractions that danced across the meniscus of each droplet.
